Family Law Blog: Peaches Geldof and short marriages

Monday February 9, 2009 at 1:10pm

I am sure you will have heard by now, even if you try to avoid hearing such things, that Peaches Geldof and her husband of 6 months have separated and intend to divorce.

It was reported that she said soon after the marriage that she didn't view it as "forever".

Divorce solicitors do hear of similar, if not quite so extreme and "fashionable" very short marriages. They can have a significant impact. But in English law they cannot start a divorce until at least 1 year of marriage has passed. As they were married and seem to mainly live in the US though, there may be different rules.

It remains to be seen whether there are any major financial disputes. I hope they follow the lead of Guy Ritchie and Madonna and use collaborative family law.

Meanwhile, I would recommend they read our 10 Secrets of a Successful Divorce! Seriously, it would save many couples a great deal of stress and upset if they did so.
