Family Law Blog: Marilyn Monroe or Waynetta Slob?

Monday April 6, 2009 at 10:05am

An article in the Mail Online today suggests that someone has marriage problems as it seems they feel their wife does not bother any more about their appearance. The headline is a little provocative--I hope she doesn't realise it is her husband who has written in!

But we all need to take care of ourselves, don't we? It is only fair to our partners, surely? Probably a failure to do so could be regarded as unreasonable behaviour under divorce law.

I know I have suddenly decided to lose 2 stone in weight, partly after my wife lost hers. And I am about to have laser surgery on my eyesight to avoid glasses.

Is this because of vanity, my 50th birthday (the male menopause?) or needing to ensure my wife is still happy with my appearance? Probably a mixture of all of these.

But from my work over 25 years I know this: sex or attraction problems are so often mentioned as the underlying cause of marriage breakdown and most often mentioned as a ground for divorce.

Yes Andrew, it is certainly very common for my clients to come to me citing a lack of interest in their other half and wanting to know if it is possible to have a divorce simply because their spouse has let themselves go!...
